The talented Anaïs Mitchell wrote the musical score, lyrics, and story for the musical Hadestown. It recounts a reimagined version of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice, a young girl in need of sustenance, ventures to work in a grim industrial depiction of the Greek underworld to escape poverty and the biting cold. Her beau Orpheus, a destitute singer-songwriter, sets off on a mission to save her.

In its debut Broadway launch, the show received 14 Tony Awards nominations, winning eight prestigious awards. It attained itself the coveted label of ‘Best Musical,’ much to the enthusiastic fans. The performance premiered on Broadway on April 17, 2019, gaining commendation. It was acclaimed for its management and the remarkable acting by André De Shields. The New York Times described it as "exquisite" and "mesmerizing," praising its improvement from the New York Theatre Workshop version. David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter stated it "absolutely fabulous," with a special mention of Gray and Page's excellent performances.

TimeOut NY urges its readers to enjoy the wonderful interpretation of Hadestown. They shared, “Here's my advice: Go to hell. And by hell, I mean Hadestown, Anaïs Mitchell's engaging and emotional new Broadway musical. In essence, the production reinterprets the age-old Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice: Boy crosses paths with a girl, they fall in love, they face hardships, they go through trials, and they find themselves in the underworld—sounds similar to the old story, right? But it's the genius of Anaïs Mitchell's contemporary take on this enduring tale—and Rachel Chavkin's—that infuse life back into this traditional narrative.”
